Laurie is a regular presenter or co-presenter state and national conferences.

Laurie has been the only Adult Basic Education Instructor at the Waushara County Jail for close to twenty years. She believes that learning takes a lifetime and has made it a practice to be a lifelong learner.  She returned to school when she was 40 to earn a Master of Science Education Furthermore, she believes all individuals must have a stimulating educational environment where they can grow physically, mentally, emotionally, and socially.  She believes creating a contagious enthusiasm for life-long learning and providing a safe judgment-free classroom where students are invited to share their ideas and take risks is key to student success.

When Laurie is not teaching, she is working together with her husband Joel and their sons on their cash crop and beef farm in Waushara County.  She and Joel have four grown children and five grandchildren. Whenever possible, she loves drive tractor and do field work; she even drives a semi down a field to help pick up hay!

Two quotes shape her approach to Correctional Education.

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”    Nelson Mandela

“He who opens a school, closes a prison.”  Victor Hugo
